The most over-the-top celebrity pets

Which of these celebrity pets are the most extravagant? In this edition of “The Most,” Carlos Greer has the scoop on Lady Gaga’s $60,000 koi fish, Mike Tyson’s white tiger and Nicolas Cage’s pet octopus.

Nicolas Cage, Octopus - $150,000

A truly difficult - not to mention unusual - pet to own, octopi are anti-social, potentially poisonous and you can’t even give them a hug. None of this stopped Nicolas Cage however, with the actor picking up an octopus to call his very own for a smooth $150,000. Perhaps the most noteworthy part of the story is that Cage claims the octopus and his other exotic pets help him with his acting skills.

Lady Gaga, Koi Fish - $60,000

Lady Gaga has decided to spend her time recuperating from hip surgery with some fishy friends. The singer has reportedly purchased and installed a large fish tank in her home and has filled it with 27 koi carp. Gaga suffered a tear on her right hip and has purchased the fish to keep her entertained as recovers from surgery. The Born This Way singer is said to have splashed out over £40,000 on the special fish which have been shipped in from Japan. The ornamental Japanese fish appeared to Gaga in a dream and the extravagant singer decided she wanted them instantly.

Mike Tyson, 3 Royal Bengal Tigers - $4,000 a month

Arguably the world’s most famous boxer, Mike Tyson is also known for his unusual pet choices. As well as being a lover of pigeons, he also once owned three Royal Bengal tigers; two girls named Kenya and Storm and a male tiger named Boris. You might even recognise one of them from a starring role in hit film, The Hangover in 2009. The tigers cost him $4000 a month just on their upkeep and sadly, when it turned out Tyson didn’t have a proper license for owning the tigers, they were sent to a refugee in Colorado to live out their days away from the Hollywood spotlight.

Michael Jackson, Chimpanzee - $65,000

Once upon a time, Michael Jackson was never seen without his pet Chimpanzee Bubbles tagging far behind him. During the Bad world tour, MJ even took Bubbles with him to Japan where they both enjoyed a cup of tea with the mayor of Osaka. Technically, the late MJ didn’t spend a penny on his beloved Bubbles, adopting him in 1985 from a cancer research clinic - but if you fancy owning your own chimpanzee pet, you’ll be shelling out an impressive $65,000 to make the dream come true. It’s certainly not chimp change.

Usher, GoldenDoodle dog - $12,000

American musician Usher Raymond IV, known better to us as simply Usher, proved himself to be a true lover of pet pooches with his most recent purchase, a GoldenDoodle puppy. A cross-breed between a golden retriever and a poodle, Usher picked up the pup named Poppy at the Second Annual Pencils of Promise Gala in Guastavino in New York. Coming in at $12,000, you’d better hope that puppy comes ready housetrained.

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tortoise - $400

Although Leonardo DiCaprio’s tortoise only set him back a cool $400 (a mere drop in the ocean for Hollywood heavyweights), the animals are known to live as long as 100 years - so it’s more of an investment in time than one of money. Leo’s Sulcata tortoise can grow as big as 200 pounds and is expected to live for another 80 years, making it probably the longest and most successful relationship Leo’s ever had.
