Your prom updo is 2019’s biggest holiday hair trend

For anyone who went to prom sometime between the late '90s or early '00s, odds are you wanted an updo for the big day. During your appointment at your local salon, the stylist likely spent hours curling your hair into ringlets, then poking your head with a dozen or so bobby pins during the styling session to give you that classic updo. And while the thick cloud of hairspray at the end of the appointment nearly suffocated you, there was no chance your crunchy curls were falling that night with all that product. But no updo would be complete without those face-framing tendrils the stylist left out to frame your face — and now they're making a comeback.

Laura Harrier

At the 2019 Oscars, Laura Harrier wore the updo of your teenage dreams. She accessorized her curly high bun with a few wispy tendrils.

Karlie Kloss

Karlie Kloss added a second accessory to her loose top knot with tendrils by wrapping a black velvet ribbon around the updo.

Rihanna

Rihanna, master of looking effortlessly cool, wore her hair in a messy top knot at her 2019 Diamond Ball.

Katy Perry

The singer's French roll is a 2019 update of the updo every model wore in those special edition prom magazines. Her take on the style includes a voluminous bump at the crown and wavy center-parted curtain bangs.

Cardi B

At the 2019 Diamond Ball, Cardi B wore an elegant, side-parted updo. She'd get our vote for prom queen with this formal style.
