2000-year-old relic of ancient Britain dug up by a metal detectorist stuns at auction

An amazing relic of ancient Britain dug up by a metal detectorist - a 2000-year-old Celtic Chieftain’s chariot brooch - smashed its auction estimate to smithereens to sell for tens of thousands of pounds. The „outstandingly rare” object, also known as a horse brooch, was guided at £6,000-£8,000 by Hansons Auctioneers but an intense bidding battle took the final hammer price to £55,000 - seven times its estimate. The result has been hailed as one of Hansons’ best ever by the firm’s owner Charles Hanson. He led the auction as four phone bidders battled to secure the unique object, which was found by detectorist Ray Pusey in his home county of Buckinghamshire in October 2020. Mr Pusey, a detectorist for 30 years, confessed that he nearly didn’t go out the day he found it but, after an hour of searching, received a strong signal. He dug down about 8-10ins and discovered his „best find ever”.

Penguin and elephant spotted on Mars?

Is there life on Mars? Specifically, a penguin and an elephant! Eagle-eyed space fans have noticed some strangely familiar shapes in the first 360-degree panorama taken by the Mastcam-Z instrument aboard NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover. The incredibly detailed view of the Red Planet has been examined for signs of life, and the uncanny outlines of two Earth-bound creatures have been spotted on the top-left horizon. One online space-watcher asked NASA: „How do you explain the elephant and the penguin?” The jaw-dropping panorama used a zoomable pair of cameras and was stitched together on Earth from 142 individual images taken on Sol 3, the third Martian day of the mission.

NASA funds magnetic moon robots that would levitate over a flexible track

NASA has greenlit an infrastructure idea for autonomously transporting cargo on the Moon using magnetic robots that would levitate over a flexible track. It is one of four advanced space concepts from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory that have been selected to receive grants for further research and development. Early-stage research into futuristic space ideas - a lunar levitation track system, light bending lunar power system, method for making soil from asteroid material, and more - could help revolutionise NASA’s technology toolbox and pioneer new kinds of missions. More than a dozen researchers from within the agency, industry, and academia will receive grants from the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program to study their concepts’ feasibility.
